What Is Faceted Navigation?

Faceted navigation is the filtering system common on ecommerce and listing sites that lets users narrow results by attributes like size, color, price, or brand — usually via checkboxes or dropdowns in a sidebar.

The SEO Problems It Creates

Every filter combination a user can select typically generates its own unique URL (?color=blue&size=large), which multiplies the number of crawlable pages on a site dramatically. Left unmanaged, this creates several problems at once: near-duplicate content across thousands of filtered URLs, wasted crawl budget as bots work through low-value pages instead of pages you actually want indexed, and diluted link equity spread across near-identical variations.

How to Fix It

The standard approach combines a few tactics: canonical tags pointing filtered URLs back to the main category page, robots.txt or meta robots rules blocking low-value parameter combinations from being crawled or indexed, and reserving indexation for only the filter combinations that have genuine, distinct search demand (like “blue running shoes” if that’s actually searched, but not every possible color-size combination).
