What Is Google Penguin?
Google Penguin is an algorithm update, first launched in 2012, designed to identify and penalize sites using spammy or manipulative link-building tactics to boost their rankings.
What It Targets
Penguin specifically targets unnatural link profiles: paid links, link farms, excessive reciprocal linking, over-optimized anchor text (the same exact-match keyword phrase used across too many backlinks), and other patterns that look engineered rather than earned.
Its History
Early versions of Penguin ran as periodic updates that could take months to reflect a site’s recovery after cleaning up its link profile — a frustrating wait for sites hit by it. Since 2016, Penguin has run as part of Google’s real-time core algorithm, meaning changes to a site’s link profile are reflected much faster. Staying compliant today mainly means avoiding manipulative link schemes and disavowing toxic backlinks if your site is targeted by a negative SEO attack.
