What Are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google displays at the top of search results, synthesising information from multiple sources into a direct answer before any standard organic listing appears.

How Often They Appear

AI Overviews have expanded rapidly since launch, now appearing on roughly 60% of Google searches globally as of early-to-mid 2026. In Australia specifically, AI Overviews trigger on around 21% of searches, and an estimated 64% of Australians report having seen one — a meaningful and fast-growing share of search real estate for any business relying on organic visibility.

How to Optimise for Them

Because AI Overviews synthesise from multiple sources rather than crediting one page prominently, the same fundamentals that support featured snippets tend to help: clear, direct answers near the top of a page, well-structured content, and credible, well-sourced information. There’s no separate “AI Overviews SEO” checklist distinct from strong content and technical fundamentals — being cited depends on being a source Google’s system already trusts enough to draw from.
