What Is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a dedicated, fully conversational search experience within Google, where the entire interface becomes a back-and-forth chat rather than a traditional page of results — letting users ask follow-up questions and refine what they’re looking for in the same session.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews

AI Overviews sit above standard organic results on a normal search results page, generated for a single query. AI Mode replaces the results page entirely with a conversational interface built for more complex, multi-step, or exploratory questions — comparing options, working through a problem, or digging into a topic across several linked questions.

What It Means for SEO

As more exploratory, comparison-style searches shift into AI Mode’s conversational format, visibility increasingly depends on being a source the underlying model trusts across an entire conversation, not just a single query. The content fundamentals remain familiar — clarity, credibility, structure — but the surface area to optimise for now includes multi-turn, follow-up-style questions rather than just a single search term.
