What Is a Title Tag?

A title tag is the HTML element that defines the clickable headline shown in search results, browser tabs, and when a page is shared on social media.

Best Practices

Lead with your primary keyword where it reads naturally, make the title accurately reflect what the page actually delivers, and write it to be genuinely click-worthy rather than just keyword-stuffed. Each page on a site should have a unique title tag — duplicates make it harder for both users and search engines to distinguish between pages.

Character Limits

There’s no strict character limit, but titles are generally truncated in search results around 50-60 characters (Google renders based on pixel width, not a fixed character count, so exact cutoffs vary). Keeping titles concise and front-loading the most important words helps ensure the full message comes through even if it gets truncated.
