What Is an AI Hallucination?
An AI hallucination is a response from an AI model that’s factually wrong, fabricated, or unsupported by real evidence — delivered with the same confident tone as an accurate answer, with no built-in signal to the user that anything is off.
Why It Happens
LLMs generate text by predicting statistically likely word sequences, not by checking facts against a verified database by default. Without grounding (feeding the model real, current source material), a model can produce plausible-sounding but entirely incorrect information, especially for niche, recent, or narrowly specific topics it wasn’t well-trained on.
What It Means for Brands
Hallucinations can misrepresent a business — getting pricing, services, or factual details wrong inside an AI-generated answer a customer never double-checks. Maintaining clear, accurate, well-structured, and consistently published information across your site and other authoritative sources is the main lever businesses have to reduce the odds of being hallucinated about inaccurately.
