What Is Search Volume?
Search volume is the average number of times a specific keyword is searched over a given period, usually reported as a monthly average.
How It’s Measured
Tools like Ahrefs and Google Keyword Planner estimate search volume using aggregated, anonymized search data (Google’s own data, in Google’s case) combined with statistical modeling to smooth out seasonal spikes and dips. Different tools can report noticeably different volume figures for the same keyword because of differences in data sources and estimation methods.
Using It in Keyword Research
Search volume tells you how much demand exists for a term, but it’s most useful alongside keyword difficulty and search intent — a high-volume keyword that’s extremely competitive or mismatched to your content may be less valuable than a lower-volume term you can realistically rank for and that converts well. Seasonal terms in particular can look misleadingly low or high depending on when you check them.
