What Is LLMs.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed standard — a plain text file placed in a site’s root directory — that gives AI models a concise, Markdown-formatted map of a site’s most important pages and resources, written specifically to be easy for an LLM to parse.
How It Differs from Robots.txt
Robots.txt controls crawler access — what bots are allowed or disallowed from crawling. llms.txt doesn’t control access at all; it’s a curated guide to your best content, intended to help an AI model quickly find and understand your most relevant material rather than block or permit anything. It doesn’t replace your XML sitemap or robots.txt, and it doesn’t guarantee any AI system actually uses it.
Should You Add One?
As an emerging, not-yet-universally-adopted standard, llms.txt is low-effort and low-risk to add, but adoption among major AI platforms is still inconsistent as of 2026 — it’s worth watching and implementing as a forward-looking step rather than treating it as a guaranteed lever for AI visibility today.
