What Is Link Popularity?
Link popularity measures the overall quantity and quality of backlinks pointing to a website, used as a broad indicator of how authoritative or trusted a site appears.
How It’s Measured
While there’s no single official metric, tools like Ahrefs’ Domain Rating or Moz’s Domain Authority approximate link popularity by analyzing the number of referring domains, the authority of those domains, and the overall structure of a site’s backlink profile.
Why It Still Matters
Link popularity was one of the earliest ranking signals in search (dating back to the original PageRank concept), and while modern algorithms weigh many additional factors, the underlying idea — that being linked to by other trusted sites signals your own trustworthiness — remains a foundational part of how search engines evaluate authority today.
