Unnatural Links

What Are Unnatural Links?

Unnatural links are backlinks created specifically to manipulate search rankings rather than earned through genuine editorial merit — paid links, link exchanges done purely for SEO, links from link farms or PBNs, and similar manufactured link patterns.

How to Recognise Them

Unnatural link profiles often show telltale patterns: over-optimized anchor text (the same exact-match keyword phrase repeated across many links), links from clearly irrelevant or low-quality sites, sudden unexplained spikes in link volume, or links traced back to known paid link networks.

How to Avoid a Penalty

Google’s spam policies explicitly prohibit link schemes, and sites found with significant unnatural link profiles risk a manual action that can severely damage or eliminate rankings. If a site is targeted by negative SEO or has accumulated unnatural links through past practices, Google’s Disavow Tool lets you formally tell Google to disregard specific links when evaluating your site.
