What Is an AI Citation?
An AI citation is a mention or reference to your website, content, or brand that appears inside an AI-generated answer — whether shown as a clickable source link (as Google AI Overviews and Perplexity often do) or simply referenced in the generated text itself.
AI Citation vs Backlink
A backlink is a deliberate hyperlink placed by another site, permanent until removed, and crawlable by search engines. An AI citation is generated dynamically per query, may or may not include a clickable link, and can vary from one identical question to the next depending on what the model retrieves at that moment — making it a fundamentally less stable, less measurable signal than a traditional backlink.
Why It’s Becoming a Key Metric
As more searches get answered directly inside AI tools without a click to any website, being cited — even without a guaranteed click — preserves brand visibility and trust that would otherwise be lost entirely to a zero-click AI answer. Tracking how often and how accurately your brand is cited across AI platforms is an emerging category of tools and reporting, roughly analogous to how backlink tracking works for traditional SEO.
