What Is Share of Model?

Share of model measures how often your brand is mentioned or cited by AI models — across tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — relative to how often competitors are mentioned for the same category of questions.

How It Differs from Share of Voice

Share of voice measures visibility across traditional search rankings for a defined set of keywords. Share of model measures visibility inside AI-generated answers instead, which follows different rules entirely — an AI model might favour a source based on how clearly it’s written or how well it’s grounded in retrievable data, independent of where that source ranks in traditional organic results.

How to Track It

Measuring share of model typically involves running a consistent set of representative prompts across major AI platforms and recording which brands get mentioned or cited in the responses. This is a genuinely new and still-maturing measurement category, with a growing number of dedicated AI-visibility tracking tools emerging specifically to serve it.
