What Is a Context Window?
A context window is the maximum amount of text — measured in “tokens,” roughly chunks of words — that an AI model can take into account at one time when generating a response, including both the user’s prompt and any retrieved source material.
Why It Limits What AI Can Process
Once the combined input exceeds a model’s context window, earlier information gets dropped or truncated. This means an AI system grounding its answer in retrieved web content can only actually “read” a limited amount of any given page or set of pages before generating its response, regardless of how much content actually exists on the source.
What It Means for Content
Because only a portion of a long page may realistically fit within an AI system’s context window during retrieval, leading with the clearest, most directly relevant information — rather than burying the key answer deep in a long article — improves the odds that the part of your content an AI model actually processes is the part that matters most.
