What Is Indexability?

Indexability refers to whether a search engine is able to add a given page to its index — the massive database it draws search results from. A page can be perfectly crawlable and still fail to be indexed if something is actively blocking it.

What Blocks a Page from Being Indexed

Common indexability blockers include a noindex meta tag or HTTP header, a robots.txt disallow rule, a canonical tag pointing to a different URL, thin or duplicate content Google chooses not to index, or the page simply never being discovered because nothing links to it.

How to Check If a Page Is Indexable

The fastest check is Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool, which tells you directly whether a URL is indexed and, if not, why. You can also search site:yourdomain.com/page-url in Google to see if it shows up, though Search Console gives a far more reliable and detailed answer.
