What Is Link Spam?
Link spam refers to backlinks created purely to manipulate search rankings rather than to genuinely reference or endorse content — comment spam, low-quality directory submissions, automated link networks, and similar tactics.
Common Examples
Typical link spam includes mass blog comment or forum signature links, links purchased in bulk from low-quality sites, links generated by automated software, and links placed on obviously irrelevant or low-authority pages with no editorial purpose.
Google’s Spam Link Policy
Google’s link spam policies explicitly prohibit any link-building scheme intended to manipulate PageRank or rankings, whether the links are bought, exchanged, or generated by automated tools. Sites that build large volumes of spam links risk being caught by Penguin-related algorithmic filters or, in more severe cases, a manual action — and disavowing the offending links is often part of the recovery process.
