What Is a Private Blog Network?
A private blog network (PBN) is a group of websites, often built on expired domains with existing authority, created and controlled by one person or agency for the sole purpose of linking to a “money site” to manipulate its rankings.
Why PBNs Violate Google’s Guidelines
Google’s link scheme policy explicitly prohibits building or participating in networks of sites created to pass artificial ranking signals. PBNs exist purely to fabricate the appearance of natural, independent endorsement — which is the opposite of what a backlink is supposed to represent.
The Risk
Google actively hunts for PBN footprints: shared hosting IPs, similar site templates, identical WHOIS ownership, and unnatural outbound linking patterns. When a network is discovered, every site it touches — including the “money site” it was built to help — can be hit with a manual action, sometimes wiping out rankings entirely.
