What Is a Primary Keyword?

A primary keyword is the main search term a page is built and optimized to rank for — the single query that best represents what the page is about and who it’s trying to reach.

How to Choose the Right One

Start with search intent: the primary keyword should match what someone searching that term actually wants to find, not just what you want to say. From there, weigh search volume against realistic ranking difficulty for your site’s current authority — chasing a high-volume term you have no chance of ranking for wastes the page’s potential.

Where to Place It

The primary keyword typically belongs in the title tag, the H1, early in the opening paragraph, and naturally throughout the body copy — without forcing it in unnaturally. One page should generally target one primary keyword (plus supporting secondary keywords) to avoid competing against your own content in search results.
