What Is RankBrain?

RankBrain is a machine learning system Google introduced in 2015 to help interpret search queries it hasn’t seen before or that are ambiguous, ranking among the more significant components of Google’s overall ranking algorithm.

What It Does

Rather than relying purely on exact keyword matching, RankBrain uses machine learning to interpret the likely meaning of unfamiliar or vague queries by relating them to similar, better-understood searches. It also plays a role in evaluating which results best satisfy a given query based on patterns learned from broad search behavior.

How It Fits Into the Algorithm

RankBrain works alongside the rest of Google’s ranking systems rather than replacing them — it’s one signal among many, not a standalone algorithm update you can specifically “optimize for.” Its practical implication for SEO is reinforcing why writing naturally for real search intent, rather than narrowly for exact-match keywords, tends to perform better under Google’s modern systems.
