What Is Tiered Link Building?
Tiered link building is a strategy that builds additional backlinks pointing to your existing backlinks, rather than only building links directly to your own site.
How the Tier Structure Works
Tier 1 links point directly to your money site — these should be high-quality and ideally earned naturally. Tier 2 links point to those Tier 1 pages, aiming to boost their authority (and by extension, the value they pass to you). Some practitioners extend this further into Tier 3, building links to the Tier 2 pages.
The Risks
Because lower tiers are often built with lower-quality, higher-volume tactics (the kind of link building too risky to point directly at a money site), tiered link building sits close to — and easily crosses into — link scheme territory. If Google identifies the pattern or if a lower-tier link source gets penalized, the risk can flow back up the chain in ways that are hard to predict or control.
