Search Algorithm

What Is a Search Algorithm?

A search algorithm is the system a search engine uses to evaluate and rank the pages in its index against a specific query, determining what order results are displayed in.

How It Ranks Pages

Modern search algorithms combine hundreds of interacting signals: relevance to the query, page and site authority (often backlink-driven), content quality and depth, technical factors like page speed and mobile usability, and increasingly, machine learning systems that help interpret intent behind ambiguous or conversational queries.

The Main Factors That Influence It

Broadly, ranking comes down to relevance (does this page answer the query well) and authority (can this source be trusted). Around that core, search engines layer in user experience signals, freshness for time-sensitive topics, and personalization factors like location. Because algorithms are refined constantly through both minor tweaks and larger named updates, SEO strategy has increasingly shifted toward consistently strong fundamentals rather than reacting to any single change.
