A sitewide link is a backlink that appears on every single page of a website, typically placed in the footer, sidebar, or main navigation, rather than being embedded contextually within one piece of content.
Why They Can Hurt Your SEO
A single sitewide link technically generates thousands of individual backlinks (one per page it appears on), which can look artificially inflated and unnatural to search engines, especially if the anchor text is identical across every instance. This pattern is a common footprint associated with paid links or link exchanges rather than genuine editorial endorsement.
When They’re Fine
Not all sitewide links are problematic — a footer credit for a web design agency, or a “powered by” attribution, is common and generally not an issue at reasonable scale. The risk mainly arises when sitewide links are used deliberately and at volume specifically to manipulate rankings, particularly with exact-match commercial anchor text.
