What Is User Intent?

User intent (also called search intent) is the underlying goal a person has when they run a search — what they actually want to find, learn, or accomplish, beyond the literal words of the query.

How to Identify It

The clearest signal is what’s already ranking for a given keyword: if page one is dominated by comparison articles, intent is likely commercial investigation; if it’s product pages, it’s transactional. SERP features present for a query (a local pack, a shopping carousel, a featured snippet) also strongly hint at what Google believes users want.

Matching Content to What Users Actually Want

Content that technically covers a topic but doesn’t match the format or depth searchers expect tends to underperform, regardless of quality. Aligning your page’s format, tone, and level of detail with genuine user intent is consistently one of the highest-leverage things you can do for rankings.
