What Is Search Intent?

Search intent is the underlying reason behind a search query — what the person actually wants to find, learn, or do, as opposed to the literal words they typed.

The Four Main Types of Search Intent

  • Informational — looking to learn something (“what is domain rating”)
  • Navigational — trying to reach a specific site or page (“ahrefs login”)
  • Commercial investigation — comparing options before a decision (“best rank tracking tools”)
  • Transactional — ready to take an action, usually a purchase (“buy ahrefs subscription”)

How to Match Content to Intent

The clearest signal of intent is what’s already ranking for a term — if page one is dominated by product pages, the intent is likely transactional; if it’s all blog posts and guides, it’s informational. Matching your content format, depth, and tone to what searchers actually expect for a given query is one of the strongest levers you have for improving rankings, often more impactful than any single on-page tweak.
