What Is a SERP?

A SERP (search engine results page) is the page that appears after you run a search — the full set of organic listings, ads, and additional features Google or another search engine returns for a given query.

What Appears on a Modern SERP

Today’s SERPs go well beyond a simple list of blue links. Depending on the query, a page might include paid ads, a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, a local pack with a map, an image or video carousel, a knowledge panel, and standard organic results, all arranged based on what’s most relevant to that specific search.

Why SERP Layout Matters for SEO

Because SERP layout varies significantly by query type and intent, understanding what a target keyword’s SERP actually looks like — before creating content for it — helps determine whether ranking in the traditional organic listings is even the most valuable goal, or whether a different SERP feature (like a featured snippet or local pack) represents the bigger opportunity.
