What Is Conversational Search?
Conversational search is a search experience built around multi-turn, natural dialogue — asking a question, getting an answer, then asking a follow-up that builds on the previous exchange — rather than a single, standalone query.
Conversational Search vs Voice Search
Voice search refers specifically to the input method: speaking a query aloud instead of typing it. Conversational search refers to the format of the interaction itself, regardless of input method — Google’s AI Mode and tools like ChatGPT offer conversational search through typed text, not just voice. A search can be conversational without being voice-based, and voice-based without being conversational.
What It Means for Content
Conversational search rewards content that can support a chain of related questions, not just a single isolated answer — covering a topic with enough depth that follow-up questions (“what about…”, “how does that compare to…”) can still be answered from the same source or a clearly related one on your site.
