What Is Universal Search?
Universal search is Google’s practice of blending different content types — images, videos, news, maps, shopping results — into a single search results page, rather than showing only standard web links.
How It Blends Results
Instead of separating results by content type into different tabs, universal search surfaces the most relevant format for a given query directly within the main results: a video carousel for “how to” queries, image packs for visual searches, a map pack for local queries, and standard organic listings mixed throughout.
Why It Matters
Universal search means ranking well isn’t only about competing in the traditional “ten blue links” — depending on the query, video, image, or local optimization can capture just as much visibility as a standard organic listing, sometimes more. Understanding which result types dominate a given SERP helps prioritize the right content format for a given keyword.
