What Is Natural Language Understanding?
Natural language understanding (NLU) is a branch of AI focused on interpreting the actual meaning behind human language, including context, intent, and nuance — not just recognizing individual words.
NLU vs NLP
Natural language processing (NLP) is the broader field covering how computers work with human language generally, including tasks like translation and text generation. NLU is a more specific subset focused on comprehension — genuinely understanding what a piece of text or a query means, including ambiguity, sentiment, and implied intent.
Its Role in Modern Search
NLU underpins how systems like Google’s BERT and MUM interpret conversational, complex, or ambiguous queries — understanding that “can you get medicine for someone else’s prescription” is fundamentally a question about pharmacy policy, for instance, not a literal string match on those words. Its growth is part of why writing naturally for real questions, rather than narrowly for exact-match keyword phrases, has become more effective over time.
