Log File Analysis

What Is Log File Analysis?

Log file analysis examines a website’s raw server logs — the record of every single request made to the server, including every visit from search engine bots — to understand exactly how crawlers interact with a site.

What It Reveals About Crawling

Unlike most SEO tools, which estimate crawler behavior, log files show precisely what happened: which pages Googlebot actually visited, how often, how it responded to different status codes, and where crawl budget is being spent (or wasted) on low-value URLs. This makes it one of the few genuinely direct windows into real crawler behavior, rather than inference.

Tools Used

Dedicated log file analyzers (like Screaming Frog Log File Analyser or JetOctopus) parse raw server logs into readable reports, while some hosting platforms and CDNs offer built-in log access or analysis features. Because raw log files can be enormous on larger sites, dedicated tooling is generally necessary to make the data usable.
