Reciprocal Link

What Is a Reciprocal Link?

A reciprocal link is created when two websites agree to link to each other, often through a direct arrangement between site owners rather than either link being independently earned.

Link Exchanges

Reciprocal linking was common in early SEO as a straightforward way to build backlinks quickly. Small-scale, genuinely relevant exchanges (two complementary local businesses linking to each other, for example) still happen naturally and aren’t inherently problematic.

When Link Exchanges Are Risky

The risk appears at scale — organized, large-volume link exchanges done purely to manipulate rankings fall under Google’s link scheme guidelines and can trigger the same penalties as other unnatural link patterns. The safer approach is treating any reciprocal link as you would any other: relevant, genuinely useful to readers, and not part of a systematic exchange arrangement.
