What Is a Mirror Site?

A mirror site is an exact (or near-exact) copy of another website, hosted at a different URL or server, containing the same content as the original.

Legitimate Uses

Mirror sites have legitimate applications: distributing heavy server load across multiple locations, providing backup access if a primary site goes down, or serving content faster to users in different geographic regions.

When It Creates a Duplicate Content Risk

Problems arise when a mirror isn’t properly signaled to search engines as a duplicate — without canonical tags pointing back to the original, or a clear indication of which version is authoritative, search engines may struggle to determine which copy should rank, potentially diluting visibility across both versions or triggering duplicate content filtering.
