What Are Meta Tags?
Meta tags are snippets of HTML code in a page’s <head> section that provide information about the page to browsers and search engines, without appearing in the visible content itself.
Types of Meta Tags
Common meta tags include the title tag (though technically not a “meta” tag by strict definition, it’s usually grouped with them), meta description, meta robots (controlling indexing and crawling behavior), viewport (controlling mobile rendering), and Open Graph tags (controlling how a page appears when shared on social media).
Which Ones Still Matter for SEO
The meta description and title tag remain highly relevant, directly shaping how a page appears in search results and influencing click-through rate. The meta robots tag still directly controls indexing behavior. The old meta keywords tag, by contrast, has been ignored by Google for ranking purposes for well over a decade and isn’t worth maintaining.
