What Is Query Deserves Freshness?
Query Deserves Freshness (QDF) is a concept in Google’s ranking systems that temporarily favors newer, more recently published content for queries where freshness matters — breaking news, trending topics, or fast-changing subjects.
How It Works
For a query Google determines is time-sensitive (based on factors like a sudden spike in search volume or news coverage around a topic), the algorithm can boost recently published or updated content, even over pages that would normally rank strongly based on authority alone.
Which Queries It Affects
QDF applies mainly to genuinely time-sensitive searches — breaking news, product launches, live events — rather than evergreen topics where recency isn’t inherently more valuable. For evergreen content, regularly updating and republishing a page can still support relevance over time, but it operates differently from the sharper, more temporary freshness boost QDF describes for trending queries.
